Well, its been some time, hasn't it? Don't think I've had the mind to write a word in... Months? Maybe even a year, now. But hell, sometimes you have to focus on other things. In the old world, it might have been school, work, family, any manner of things; These days its just surviving. I made it out of Hill City fine, got clear down to Mexico, and back up again to Canada. Wanted to see the world some, since it ended. Little late, but better than never, right? Like what I said early on, "Do anything to make life a little more tolerable when you have the time."... Well, that's what it's all about. Time. I'm out of it. You'd think it was the sick, the shamblers, an injury, or some Bandits that would do me in. Nope- It's a simple thing, really. Cancer in my lungs. Turns out that illness that I thought I caught back in the caves in Fork County was just the beginning signs of some tumors. I got lucky living this long, pulled strength and had random bouts of being "better", but I'm not kidding myself. Last lesson I can teach is this: Strength in Numbers.

My team left me for dead at one point, and I still hold that against them, but they weren't my people. In the year I've spent travelling around, I've managed to build a community, gather people, and make something of a Family. We help eachother get by, and we've been thriving. Most everything I wrote before was practical information, how to pack a bag, what supplies to prioritize, how to handle an injury... But this is the most important thing I can pass on as a lesson. Find your people, make a community, you're always gonna be stronger together. You can make it alone for only so long before you end up dying. No matter where you go, or what you do, do your best to not face it by yourself. Everything can be stripped from you in a moment, but not if you've still got your people to keep moving on with.

To whoever reads this, I wish you good luck. Better than mine. Hopefully you find your community before you know you're gonna die no matter what happens.

My name was John Reed. I used to be a man, and now I'm nothing more than words on paper. I hope my lessons are worth something, and that whoever ends up reading these words can say that they helped. If you just so happen to cross a little old bunker with some ramshackle huts out in the Nevada Atomic Test Site, with a wall full of posters, letters, and pictures... and a damn fine community trying to remake the world a little better than it used to be; stop in for a spell and have a chat. I'll be buried out back... And if you'd be so kind, pour out some of that cheap whiskey in the dirt I lie under, I've been told the afterlife is damn dry, and I'd like to avoid that if I can. If you'll pardon me, I've got a sunset to catch. I think it makes for a good last one.
