Scrawled Note (Dying Man's Survival Guide, Pt. 5)

Don’t cough up blood anymore, and don’t have much of a clue as to why I was. The little bit of medication that was left in the Hill City stash must have been enough, I suppose. Spent somewhere near 37 days in that attic, ran out of food a few times. Managed to scrape by on caught bugs and two cans of tuna flavored cat food that was in a cupboard up there. Lost damn near fifty pounds and I look like a skeleton but I'm still alive, which is good enough. Broke down that PPK for some spare parts since I didn’t have any .380 left anyway. Don’t like not having a gun, but at this point its not like I could shoot straight with how weak I feel. Gonna have to play some hide-and-seek with the shamblers and the locals until I get a bit better. For now, I only take some short trips from the little shelter I’ve established in this old road tunnel. Have some buckets and basins out on the side hidden behind some wrecked cars to catch water, and given that Im pretty accustomed to the bugs at this point, I’ve at least had enough with the crickets to avoid outright dying, and found a few scraps of things in the dumpsters, but this isn’t sustainable. Saw a freight truck with an old grocery store logo on it across the highway bridge. Tempting, but not something I can go for yet. Normally I try to give some kind of advice, if someone would ever read these when I inevitably end up fucked and dead at some point- but really I cant think of much here. Don’t see the point in useless, morale advice or something as dumb as “Don’t give up” relating to my situation, but I did. I fully expected to die and just got exceedingly lucky. Guess all I can say is this- Sometimes, shit happens for no good reason or any discernible cause, all you can do is roll with it. Sometimes, luck is all that gets you through, or lack of it is what kills you. Never assume just because you’ve got everything you need that it wont be stripped from you in one, bad moment. -J.
